Revisions to the Kindergarten Program Statement
(Revised September 2005)

The Kindergarten Program Statement (September 2005) has been revised to incorporate the Kindergarten outcomes of the new K–3 Social Studies Program of Studies, to be implemented provincially in September 2005. The Kindergarten Program Statement now includes seven learning areas:
  • Early Literacy (previously English language arts)
  • Early Numeracy (previously mathematics)
  • Citizenship and Identity (new, social studies)
  • Environment and Community Awareness (previously Community and Environmental Awareness)
  • Personal and Social Responsibility
  • Physical Skills and Well-being
  • Creative Expression (previously Creative and Cultural Expression)
  • Learner expectations in the early literacy, early numeracy, and citizenship and identity learning area are the outcomes for Kindergarten in English language arts, mathematics and social studies in the Program of Studies: Elementary Schools. Learner expectations in the other four learning areas are integrated and focus on the early learnings in science, physical education, health and the fine arts. Outcomes from the Kindergarten level of the health and life skills and physical education programs of study are integrated into the learning areas of Personal and Social Responsibility, Physical Skills and Well-being, and Creative Expression.

The early literacy and early numeracy learning areas reflect the Learning Commission's focus on early literacy and early numeracy in the primary grades.

Social studies learning outcomes have been integrated into the new Citizenship and Identity learning area.
