Career and Technology Studies

Career and Technology Studies (CTS) is an optional program designed for Alberta's secondary school students. CTS helps junior and senior high school students to:
  • develop skills they can apply in daily living now and in the future
  • investigate career options and make effective career choices
  • use technology (processes, tools and techniques) effectively and efficiently
  • apply and reinforce learnings developed in other subject areas
  • prepare for entry into the workplace or further learning.

    A plan to revise and refocus the CTS program is underway. The plan identifies opportunities and a process for a more focused program based on credible learner career pathways.

    The CTS curriculum is organized into 22 strands. Each strand represents a group of courses designed to support broad career and occupational opportunities. Courses are the building blocks for each strand, and defines what a student is expected to know and be able to do.

    CTS Prerequisite Requirements
    Provincially Authorized Courses – includes a complete list of CTS course codes and names from Guide to Education, Appendix 1. (75 kb)

    Program Resources
    Authorized Resources Database — A searchable database of all authorized resources.
    CTS: Strand and Course Descriptions, Revised 2005 – a document useful for principals and counsellors to evaluate out-of-province education documents in relation to 1-credit CTS courses.
    Manual for Administrators, Counsellors and Teachers – a support document that supplements other CTS curriculum documents.
    Curriculum Handbooks for Parents and Curriculum Summaries – find a summary of what students are expected to learn and be able to do – designed specifically for parents.
    Connection: Information for Teachers – find updates on curriculum, resources and a range of other topics. Published in October, January and May.
    Focus on Inquiry, 2004 – find information and supports for implementing inquiry-based learning activities in the classroom. This guide is designed to assist teachers working on their own or in teams, with or without the support of a teacher-librarian or other library personnel. (1.2 mb)
