International students in Alberta have a great network of support. All students under the age of 18 must have a homestay family and/or legal custodian within the province. This family will provide a home away from home for the student. Local school boards are available to help students find a home stay. Students also have a support network at school. Teachers and professional counselors are there to help students organize their classes and overcome any problems which they encounter while adjusting to life in Alberta.
Local School Boards
School boards offer a range of services to international student. It is important to note that every school board will offer a different selection of services. It is best to contact a school board directly to understand what services it offers. The list of services offered may include:
- assisting a student find a homestay; usually by working with a homestay coordinator;
- helping students choose a school that is right for their needs;
- providing an orientation program for students upon arrival;
- meeting students at the airport; and
- monitoring homestay arrangements and helping students relocate if necessary.
Homestay Families
A homestay family provides the international student with a private room and three meals a day. They also introduce the international student to the local area and customs, and provide support to the students if they encounter any difficulties while being away from home. Homestay families are responsible for the safety and well being of the student. They inform the parents and teachers about the welfare of the student. All international students under the age of 18 require a homestay family and/or a legal custodian within the province.
In some cases the host family can serve as the temporary legal custodian of the international student. International students are required to have a temporary legal custodian in Alberta and the host family is often the logical choice.
Schools and Teachers
Students will spend much of their time in class and at school. As such, their fellow students and teachers will become a central part of their support network. Teachers, principals and/or school counselors are available to assist students in making the best personal and educational choices. They generally meet with students soon after their arrival to help them plan their timetable and an education strategy. They are also available throughout the year to help students adjust to their new environment. Alberta teachers provide a safe and caring learning environment for students. At school, students are encouraged to participate, ask questions and ask for help when needed.
