>> The Application Process
It is recommended that you keep copies of your application for your records

How do I apply to study in Alberta?

1. Find a school you would like to attend. Before you can apply to study in Alberta, you must first decide where you want to study. This can be a challenge given the number of options available.

Our Alberta's Regions and Alberta's Cities, Towns and Rural Areas pages may help you to decide on a location. They provide you with links to the websites of a number of school jurisdictions, which have information about and links to their schools.

2. Apply to the school jurisdiction. Once you have selected a school, contact the local school jurisdiction. The school jurisdiction will provide you with the necessary forms and guide you through their application process. Depending on the jurisdiction, you may require the following documents to complete the application process:

  • Application fee (varies with each school jurisdiction);
  • A letter of reference from your current principal;
  • Your most recent report card;
  • A copy of your academic record (transcripts) for the last two years; and
  • Custodianship documents
Because each jurisdiction has different application requirements, you may require additional items. Please check with the appropriate school jurisdiction for further details.

3. Pay your tuition fees. Once you have been accepted by the school jurisdiction, they will issue you a letter of acceptance. After you receive this letter, you may pay your tuition fees to the appropriate school jurisdiction.

Fees and payment procedures for international students vary according to school jurisdiction. Generally, application fees are non-refundable. Tuition fees may be refundable if cancellation notice is reasonable or a study permit is refused. Visit our Fees and Other Expenses page for general information on the costs of studying in Alberta. If you are interested in more specific tuition figures and policies on fees and refunds, please contact the appropriate school jurisdiction.

4. Prepare your application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). After you have been accepted into a school and have paid your tuition fees, you are ready to apply for a study permit. If you are applying from outside Canada, you will need to include your letter of acceptance in your study permit application. Study permits are issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Depending on your country of origin, you may also require a Temporary Residence Visa. Please visit the CIC website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.html for the most up-to-date information on Study Permit and Visa requirements for international students.
