What's New

OUR PLANS FOR THE NEW YEAR
  • During 2012 we hope to continue distributing well over 1000 refurbished computers each month to schools, libraries, and learning-based non-profits. Thanks to financial and in-kind support from both federal and provincial governments and other partners, we are able to provide these computers (plus monitors and printers) free of charge – though we ask recipients to make their own transportation arrangements.
  • We are now receiving significantly greater numbers of laptops which we are able to pass on to you. The great majority of these laptops come with wireless capability.
  •  Some computers now available  - desktops and laptops – have dual core/twin core processors.  Most also come with 80-Gig hard-drives and at least one Gig of memory.
  • We are pleased to advise that we are now able to respond to most applications within one month.
  •  Please note as well that our “Home Access/Special Needs” initiative is increasingly utilized  by schools. Schools can apply for a limited number of computers which the school can then distribute to students for home use. It is up to the school to identify recipients based on “special needs” (e.g. with low vision), or financial need of the student’s family.

Should you require additional information about our program in general or any of the above points please call us at 780 427 9002 or 780 427 5262.

CHANGES TO OUR CALGARY OPERATION

On September 14. 2011 we celebrated distribution of our 150,000th computer and the opening of our new Calgary shop at Chinook Learning Services. A number of guests honoured us with their presence including Mr. Lee Richardson, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre, and Ms. Teresa Woo-Paw, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary Mackay.  We also presented awards to major supporters of CFS Alberta.

For photos of the new shop and the September 14 celebration, click HERE.

Please keep in mind that our Calgary Shop has relocated from Ernest Manning School to Chinook Learning Services, located at 2519 Richmond Road SW.

The phone number remains 403 243-6321 as does the shop email address: cfsclg2@telusplanet.net

ADDITIONAL RAM?

We try to install one gigabyte of memory on each computer we distribute. Recently some schools have begun providing us with additional RAM (purchased by the schools) which we are pleased to install. This means that these schools receive their computers with 2GB of RAM. If your school is interested in this possibility please discuss with your jurisdiction I.T. manager and with your nearest CFS shop before you make any purchases.

HOME ACCESS/SPECIAL NEEDS

We cannot provide computers directly to individuals. However we receive many requests from (or on behalf of) individuals – mainly for special needs students or for students without a computer at home. To address this situation schools may apply for a limited number of computers to distribute to students for school or home use. It will be up to the school to identify recipients based on “special needs” (such as students with low vision), or financial need of the student’s family. Computers provided under this aspect of our program will normally be desktops. Laptop requests will be considered only for coded special needs students.

For additional information, please call us at 780-427-5262 or 780-427-9002.
