Alberta Education Celebrates the Province's Centennial

Centennial Student Medallion

Alberta's Centennial Medallion Program

The Alberta government has created a series of four different medallions to be used as commemorative items for celebrating the province's centennial in 2005.

The Design:
Each centennial medallion is based on a similar design. The front of the medallion is illustrated with images that evoke a sense of movement, signifying a province with momentum, wealth, and continued growth. The graceful, upward motion in the arms of the people and the height of the mountains and skyscrapers represent advancement and economic activity. A steam locomotive traveling through the landscape and stylized oil rig with ribbons of vapour rising above it pay tribute to the industries that have contributed to the province's economic wealth. Aboriginal People have contributed greatly to the economy and vitality of Alberta and their contributions are acknowledged with an illustration of a tipi. The province's agricultural heritage, which is central to many Alberta families, is commemorated in a sheaf of wheat. The back of the medallion features Alberta's Coat of Arms and the dates of the province's centennial. A 100-point star rings both sides of the medallion, and represents each of the 100 years leading to the centennial. The medallion measures 30 mm (about 1 ¼") in diameter. Artsmith Communications of Edmonton, Alberta designed the medallion.

The cost of the medallion program is estimated at $1.5 million. Commemorative medallions were also created for the province's 50th and 75th birthdays.

Centenarian medallion:
Albertans 100 years old or older (centenarians) will receive a special 14-karat gold medallion from the Alberta government in 2005. An application form was sent to all centenarians in 2005, to confirm the information necessary to receive a medallion. If an eligible Alberta centenarian has not received a medallion application form, call 310-4455 to arrange for an application to be mailed out.

Student medallion:
All students registered in Kindergarten to Grade 12 in Alberta schools will be receiving a special brass centennial medallion before the end of the 2004-05 school year. Kindergarten students starting school this fall will receive a medallion at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year. Each medal will be packages with a letter from the Premier. Medallions will be shipped to school districts in 2 batches, the first for high schools as soon as possible after the scheduled May 18 delivery of the medallions. The second shipment to School districts will go out at the end of May and early June. Medallions will be sent to districts already sorted and packed by school. Each school district is coordinating the distribution of these medallions to schools in their district as well as home schooled students in the area.

Silver medallion:
The Premier and MLAs will also distribute a limited number of silver medallions as a commemorative gift from the province to visiting dignitaries and leaders from other jurisdictions, in recognition of Alberta's centennial.
