Student Centennial Medallions
FAQs and Update, June 30, 2005
As part of the celebrations of Alberta's Centennial year, Premier Klein launched a program to provide every student in Grades K - 12 with a specially minted brass commemorative medallion. Many adults will remember similar programs for the Province's 50th and 75th birthdays and we have heard from many who received those medallions about how they still have them and how much they meant to them.
During late May and early June the medallions were shipped to all school jurisdiction central offices (pre-packaged for each school in the district) and directly to independent schools. Students have been receiving them at various occasions and as part of end of year celebrations. Some schools have chosen to include the medallion presentations as part of special Centennial celebrations on, or near, the Centennial, September 1.
If you have questions about any aspect of the program, here are some FAQs that may help:

Questions from Schools:
What do I do if there were not enough medallions or letters in the shipment to my school?
Please send an e-mail to Alberta Education Centennial Projects Coordinator, virginia.stephen@gov.ab.ca, including the number of medallions needed and the complete shipping address and contact name to request more medallions. Please include an explanation of why you are requesting more. The request will be forwarded to the distribution centre immediately and usually sent out that day.
Do teachers receive a medallion as well as the students?
This is a student only program, however many schools have decided to purchase Centennial medallions for their teachers as gifts. Details for purchasing these are at www.albertacentennial.ca.
What do I do if I received too many medallions?
Please keep the medallions until you know that all of your incoming students (Kindergarten and out of province transfers) in the Fall. If you still have medallions left over please contact the Centennial Program Coordinator for return information.
Questions from Parents:
My child did not receive a medallion but I know that others in the neighbourhood did. How can I get a medallion for my child?
Please check with your school. Many schools are planning Fall celebrations at which they will distribute the medallions. In those schools, graduating students may have received their medallions in June (Grade 6, 9, 12). The Calgary Roman Catholic School District is planning this process for all of their schools.
My child is home-schooled. How do we get their medallions?
Medallions for home-schooled children have been sent to the school at which they are registered. Please contact that school to arrange to get the medallions.
We have guest children visiting this summer, are travelling to visit children outside of Alberta, or are involved in student exchanges, sports tournaments or similar special events. Can we get more medallions to give to these children?
The medallion program is only meant for Alberta students in K-12 so unfortunately we cannot supply medallions for students from outside the Province. Medallions are available for purchase and the details of how to do this are on the Centennial website at www.albertacentennial.ca. That website also has information about other centennial products, or contact the Centennial Office, Promotions and Recognitions at 780 415 2005.
